Poor orphanage in Chennai
Orphanage in Chennai — lend a hand for revolutionary changes
Hope Chennai is a home for destitute and mentally challenged children in Chennai. We look after children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities who have nowhere else to go — providing shelter, special education, therapy, vocational training, psychiatric care and daily nutrition. Hopechennai aim for a revolutionary change in the life of those, held down by disabilities.
If you have been looking for an orphanage near me to donate to, or somewhere you can donate to orphanage work that you are able to see for yourself, you are welcome to visit any of our four centres in Chennai before you give. We would rather you meet the children first.
Caring since 2003
Hope Public Charitable Trust began in 2003 and was registered under the Trust Act in 2007. What started as a small shelter is today a home, special school and vocational training centre for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Chennai.
A home, not just a shelter
Around 110 children and adults live with us. Many came from the street, from families who could not cope, or from situations where nobody else was willing to take responsibility. They receive food, clothing, medical care, therapy and a place they can call home for as long as they need it.
Education matched to each child
Children with intellectual disability, autism and cerebral palsy learn at different speeds and in different ways. Our special school and early intervention programme work with each child individually rather than moving everyone through the same syllabus.
Training towards independence
Older students move into vocational training, learning skills they can actually use. The aim is dignity and as much independence as each person can reach, not lifelong dependence on charity.
Health and psychiatric support
Many residents need ongoing psychiatric care and medical attention. We run regular health checks and work with hospitals and specialists so that treatment continues without interruption.
Transparent giving
Donations to Hope Public Charitable Trust are eligible for tax exemption under section 80G. Donors can ask how funds are used, sponsor a specific child, or visit our centres and see the work for themselves.
Ways you can help
Sponsor a child
Cover a child's education, food, clothing and medical care through the year. You can see the profile of the child you support and follow their progress.
One-time donation
Any amount helps — towards meals, therapy sessions, school materials, medicines or repairs at our homes. Donations are eligible for 80G tax exemption.
CSR partnership
Companies can partner with us on education, healthcare, nutrition or infrastructure projects, with reporting on how the contribution was used.
Celebrate an occasion with us
Birthdays, anniversaries and memorial days can be spent with our children — sharing a meal, gifts or simply time together.
Volunteer with us
Teachers, therapists, medical professionals, students and anyone willing to spend regular time with our children are welcome.
In-kind support
Groceries, clothing, school supplies, medicines, furniture and equipment are all needed. Our urgent needs list shows what is required right now.
Volunteer in orphanage Chennai
Do you have the passion to work for the cause of empowering the mentally challenged? Volunteer with us for a minimum of two hours a week. We accept volunteers from all walks of life and we are always looking for fresh ideas.
Spend your time — teach or mentor
The single thing we need most is time. Volunteer with us for a minimum of two hours a week — teaching, mentoring, running a workshop, or simply being a steady presence for a child who has very few.
Spread the news
Team up with us to raise awareness of child mental health and intellectual disability. Talking about it in your school, college, workplace or circle changes how families in Chennai are treated.
Bring the skill you already have
Teachers, therapists, doctors, counsellors, designers, accountants, photographers, students — we accept volunteers from all walks of life and we are always looking for fresh ideas.
Support the MAHLA mothers
MAHLA trains mothers of special children in tailoring, beautician work and jewellery making. Volunteers help with training, counselling sessions and finding buyers for what the mothers make.
Corporate and college groups
Companies and colleges can volunteer as a group — events, medical camps, awareness drives, facility work or a day spent with the children.
Many stay for years
Many volunteers become long-term friends of Hope Public Charitable Trust and continue to stay involved long after their first visit. Some have never stopped.
Questions people ask us
How can I donate to an orphanage in Chennai?
You can donate to our orphanage online by card, through UPI by scanning the PhonePe code on our donate page, or by direct bank transfer to our India or FCRA account. Every donation is receipted and eligible for 80G tax exemption.
Is there an orphanage near me in Chennai I can donate to?
We run centres at Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Aminjikarai and Egmore. If you live anywhere in or around Chennai, one of them is likely close to you. You are welcome to come in person rather than giving online.
Can I visit the orphanage before I donate?
Yes. Call 7358095515 or 9841330330 and we will arrange a time. We would rather you see the home, meet the children and ask questions before deciding to support us.
How do I sponsor a child?
Sponsorship covers one child's education, food, clothing and medical care for a year. You can look at our child profiles, choose a child, and we will keep you updated on their progress.
Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Hope Public Charitable Trust is registered under section 80G, so donations by Indian taxpayers qualify for tax exemption. Share your PAN and address with us and we will send the receipt.
Can I celebrate my birthday at the orphanage?
Many supporters spend their birthday, wedding anniversary or a family member's memorial day with our children — sponsoring a meal, bringing gifts, or simply spending the afternoon with them.
What kind of children does Hope Chennai care for?
We care for destitute children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities — including autism, cerebral palsy and intellectual disability. Many were abandoned, found on the street, or left with families who could not manage their care.
How can I volunteer at an orphanage in Chennai?
We welcome teachers, therapists, doctors, students and anyone who can give regular time. Teaching, therapy support, events, medical camps and administrative help are all useful to us.
