Orphanage in Chennai for children with intellectual disabilities
Hope Public Charitable Trust runs a home in Chennai for destitute children and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities. People search for an anath ashram in Chennai, an anathashrama near me, or simply the best orphanage near me — usually because they want to help, sometimes because they have a child who has nowhere to go. Either way, you are in the right place.
We are not a large institution. Around 110 residents live across our centres at Ambattur, Thirumullaivoyal, Aminjikarai and Egmore. The photographs further down this page are from our own homes and schools — ordinary days, festivals, classes, medical camps and outings.
Who lives here
Around 110 children and adults live at Hope. Most have an intellectual or developmental disability — autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome or a learning disability. Some were found abandoned, some were brought by police or child welfare committees, and some were left by families who had run out of ways to cope.
A day at the home
The day starts with prayer and breakfast, then school or therapy through the morning. Afternoons are for vocational training for the older students, play and activities for the younger ones. Evenings are homework, television, music and games before dinner.
School and therapy under one roof
Because our residents live here, their special education, speech and occupational therapy, physiotherapy and psychiatric follow-up all happen on campus. Nobody misses a session because there was no transport or no one free to take them.
Growing up and staying on
Children do not age out of Hope. Residents who reach adulthood move into vocational training and supported work. For many, this is the only home they have known and the only one they will have.
Medical care
Regular health camps, hospital visits and specialist consultations are arranged through partner hospitals and doctors who give their time. Medicines and ongoing psychiatric treatment are a constant, significant cost.
Admission
Families and agencies approach us directly or through child welfare committees. Call 7358095515 to talk to us about a child who needs a place. We will explain honestly what we can and cannot take on.
How you can support this orphanage
Food, medicines, therapy, teaching staff and the buildings themselves are paid for by people who choose to give. If you have been looking for an orphanage near you to donate to, you are welcome to visit first, meet the children, and decide afterwards.
To visit, call 7358095515 or 9841330330. Donations to Hope Public Charitable Trust qualify for 80G tax exemption.
